Three Reasons to be taking a Probiotic

Updated: Jul 15, 2020

Probiotics

Having a healthy gut that is populated with the right microflora (the good bacteria) makes all the difference in a multitude of ways for your health. There are three BIG reasons why supplementing with a probiotic is essential for overall health.

1) SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH

There has been an increasing amount of research that demonstrates just how important the gut-brain connection is for helping and preventing some health concerns such as anxiety, depression and even your ability to handle stress. As well, our gut is responsible for the production of some of our neurotransmitters (which help regulate our mood) which are integral for our wellbeing.

2) KEEPING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM STRONG

Further supportive research showing that having the right gut flora helps with your immune response and the ability of your body to fight off potential illnesses. Probiotics help to modulate your immune response by competing with the unhealthy bacteria in the lining of the gut. This is so important because our gut has something called the GALT (gut-associated lymphoid tissue) that helps to regulate our immune responses and probiotics help to support this huge immunological system that works hard to keep us healthy.

3) DECREASE INFLAMMATION

Probiotics also help to reduce inflammatory responses in our gut which can be responsible for a host of variety of symptoms and illnesses. The repopulation of your gut with good microflora, through probiotics, reduces inflammation which helps with your immune response as well as supports the gut-brain connection that regulates our mood and how we handle stress.

An easy way to support your gut is by supplementing with probiotics and/or trying to consume more fermented foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi. Consult your Naturopathic Doctor (BOOK IN HERE) before prescribing yourself any health products, not all probiotics are created equally and you want to make sure you are taking the right one for you.
